Juba, Saturday, 7th April 2024, H.E Gen. Taban Deng Gai, the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan and chairperson for infrastructure cluster, accentuated the pressing need for the country to invest in its production sector as the key to liberating South Sudan from its current economic hardships.

Speaking at the Muslim Ramadan breakfast in Juba on Saturday, Gen. Taban stressed that the agriculture sector, road transport, river transport, and electricity are crucial components in establishing industries that will alleviate the nation’s economic burdens.

Highlighting the vital role to be played by the production sector, Gen. Taban stated unequivocally that South Sudan’s economy will not witness significant improvements unless there is substantial support and investment in these sectors. Without the necessary backing from the production sector, the economy will continue to face challenges and hinder any potential progress, he warned.

Against this backdrop, Gen. Taban also disclosed that the government has implemented banking reforms aimed at controlling the exchange rate. Similarly, the government has expressed its commitment to supporting farmers through agriculture bank, demonstrating its determination to address economic challenges head-on. South Sudanese currency has experienced a significant devaluation against the US dollar, further accentuating the need for proactive measures to stabilize the economy.
