The Cabinet declines 2024–2025 budget draft

The South Sudan Council of Ministers

The Finance Ministry was asked to revise the draft 2024–25 Fiscal Year Budget to include a few of the government’s goals by the South Sudan Council of Ministers on Friday.

Jacob Maiju Korok, the Deputy Minister for Information, spoke to media just after President Salva Kiir’s Cabinet meeting in Juba. He stated that the proposed budget, which has a total budget of over 2.4 trillion South Sudanese Pounds, gave priority to agriculture.

Under the theme “Accelerate Economic Recovery through Sustaining Reforms by Prioritizing Agriculture as an Engine of Growth,” Finance and Planning Minister Awow Daniel Chuong unveiled the 2024–2025 budget.

“The Agriculture Bank of South Sudan will supply farmers with reasonable credit as one of the budget’s primary pillars,” stated Korok.

The minister also underlined the importance of investing in linked projects in the fields of mining, health, and education in order to diversify public financing sources and to expedite the implementation of changes in public procurement, asset value added tax, and property tax.

In order for the government to function as efficiently as possible, he also demanded austerity measures.

“There must be a significant reduction in spending. The government will only make minimum expenditures and pay wages and salaries. Until things settle down, no further spending will be made,” Korok stated.

The East African Community (EAC) member nations were all expected to present their budgets on the same day. But as it struggles with a severe economic crisis, South Sudan has postponed its annual budget, weeks after all other member states submitted theirs on June 13.

The South Sudanese sports teams’ and supporters’ uniforms have been authorized by the Cabinet.

Three colors were proposed to them: blue, green, and white. According to Youth and Sports Minister Joseph Geng Akec, the Council of Ministers unanimously decided to wear blue and white.

According to Akec, spectators can represent South Sudan’s national identity, values, and culture by donning the national colors during home and away games.

The chosen outfit will be worn in France at the upcoming Olympic Games.
