After the weekend’s intense rains in Warrap State’s Tonj North County, over nine villages were inundated.
Kur Kuch Angany, a county commissioner, stated that hundreds of people had been forced to flee due to the rain, with the elderly and children being most vulnerable.
Due to their exposure to the cold and bugs, Angany told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that the displaced people were in desperate need of food, shelter, and medication.
“Although the people are safe, farming has stopped because the entire area is covered in water. Over nine villages, including Alabek, Aliek, Kerik, Marial Lou, Apuk Madoch, Rual Malith, Awuul, Ajak Lor, Rualbet, Pagol, and Manalor, are flooded,” he stated.
The commissioner stated that because of the ongoing intense rains, his government had issued an evacuation order to the higher, dry areas. However, he added that no humanitarian assistance had been provided.
According to him, the population was dispersed, with some families sleeping by the sides of the road and others relocating to the Warrap County administration building. The Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), he continued, was still gathering information on the populace and their need.
According to Ayii Agiu, the Paramount Chief of Awuul Payam, the floodwaters had damaged the farms and put an end to all farming operations.
A few flood victims conveyed their suffering over the homes and crops that were devastated.
Deng Ayuel warned that starvation would soon strike since the intense rains had damaged the agriculture.
“We have nowhere to cultivate right now because the rains have been too heavy.” All we have left to eat are leaves and wild fruits,” he remarked.
He continued by saying that Aleet Majook Chok, a kid, perished two days ago, and that 150 other people had been forced to flee their homes from Atok and Noi.
Nyibol Madut declared that the infant had died and urged the authorities to step in as the people didn’t know where they would receive food.
