President Kiir's Warning: A Recipe for Disaster or a Desperate Attempt to Maintain Power

In a recent statement, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir sparked controversy by claiming that extending the transitional government of national unity would lead to violence in the country. As a human rights defender, I strongly disagree with this assertion, and instead, believe it is a desperate attempt to maintain power and avoid accountability.

President Kiir’s statement is not only alarming but also misleading. The real issue is not the extension of the transitional government, but rather the lack of political will to implement the peace agreement and address the root causes of the conflict. The government’s failure to deliver on its promises, including the formation of a unified army, the establishment of a hybrid court, and the provision of services to the citizens, has led to widespread disillusionment and frustration.

Moreover, President Kiir’s warning of violence is a thinly veiled threat to the opposition and civil society, who have been pushing for reforms and accountability. It is a clear attempt to intimidate and silence those who dare to challenge his authority. The people of South Sudan have suffered enough, and it is time for the government to take responsibility for its actions and work towards a peaceful and democratic transition.

As a human rights defender, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians, including displacement, rape, and murder. The last thing the people of South Sudan need is more violence and instability. Instead, they deserve a government that is committed to protecting their rights and promoting their well-being.

President Kiir’s statement is a detectorial attempt to shift the blame and avoid accountability. It is a desperate attempt to cling to power and maintain the status quo, which has only led to suffering, economic downfall and instability. The international community must not be fooled by this rhetoric and must instead pressure the government to implement the peace agreement and respect the rights of its citizens.

In conclusion, President Kiir’s warning of violence is a recipe for disaster, and his statement is a clear indication of his government’s lack of commitment to peace and democracy. As a human rights defender, I urge the international community to stand with the people of South Sudan and demand a peaceful and democratic transition. The time for empty rhetoric and threats is over; it is time for action and accountability.

  1. “ including displacement, rape, and murder. The last thing the people of South Sudan need is more violence and instability. Instead, they deserve a government that is committed to protecting their rights and promoting their well-being.”
This government doesn’t come through negotiations, it will be vote in by the people and that’s why we must go for elections.
