Juba City Council suspends 3 garbage collection companies over poor delivery

Due to subpar service, the Juba City Council (JCC) in Central Equatoria State has terminated the operations of three local businesses it hired to collect trash and maintain Juba’s cleanliness and greenery.

The businesses were given the task of overseeing waste disposal and garbage collection in the Munuki, Kator, and Juba blocks.

JCC First Deputy Mayor for Administration and Finance Mogga Franco Wani told reporters in Juba on Friday that the enterprises whose names he withheld were suspended because they had neglected to maintain the city’s cleanliness and greenery.

As acting mayor and first deputy mayor for administration and finance, he declared, “We suspended the operations of three companies contracted by JCC earlier this morning, Friday.” “Trash collection and block cleaning were the only things on their simple job description.”

Wani claims that the firms that had only been in operation for seven months had been halted because they lacked the manpower and capacity to oversee waste collection in the city.

He clarified, “We all know that these companies are carrying out this public duty on behalf of the city council.” “We found that the situation regarding garbage collection and cleaning in three blocks of JCC keeps getting worse in terms of capacity and human resources.”

“At the end of the day, the city council is accountable, and I think it is time we decided as JCC to suspend these companies,” the acting mayor continued.

The companies were halted, according to Thiik Thiik Mayardit, the Deputy Mayor for Social Services, because to several major problems, including inadequate funding, equipment, and capacity for trash management.

Our decision to fire the enterprises was based on their lack of personnel resources, labour capacity, and automobile ownership. He emphasised, “They were managing rubbish with cars that the municipal council had purchased. “An additional problem is that they lack funds and only receive 70% of the total amount after people gather the funds to handle the waste.”

The East Africa Go Green Company’s contract was terminated by JCC on June 7, 2023, for failing to maintain Juba’s cleanliness and greenery. The company had broken its agreement by ceasing to collect waste in the city for two months.
