Five alleged gang members from two competing gangs were taken into custody by the police on Sunday at Bentiu’s camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Unity State, with assistance from community watch groups within the camp.
Three of the accused, according to the police, are members of the Talent gang, while the other two are members of the Jamaica gang.
According to John Malith, a spokesman for Unity State police, who spoke with Radio Tamazuj, the five suspects were arrested over the weekend after creating unrest at the Bentiu IDP Camp.
“If they want to fight, they should go somewhere and fight, and we will arrest them from there, but not within the community,” the policeman remarked, acknowledging that gangs are known to cause unrest in the neighbourhood. “The two members of the Talent group were apprehended after the cops discovered them fighting. The gangs from Talent and Jamaica have announced that they will fight this weekend. We had to take action against the criminals who had created insecurity as soon as we learned of this.
Malith continued, “Two members of the Talent gang were hurt in the fighting and were taken to the Bentiu IDP camp hospital for medical attention.”
According to him, the police want the camp’s occupants to live in harmony and without having to worry about gangsters.
This is the first incidence to be reported since the year’s began. Five members of the two groups were taken into custody after they created unrest in the Bentiu IDP Camp on Sunday night, the speaker said. “We are not going to release them very soon if they do not tell us the reason for their clashes, as the reason for the fighting was unclear.”
Malith claims that while 17 individuals were first held, 12 were eventually released following further examination. He asked everyone living in the camp to report any instances of insecurity.
